In 2013, IDC reported that the total M2M connections in Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, will increase to a whooping 72.4 million in 2017 from 26.8 million in 2012, with a CAGR of 22%. Asia Pacific's largest mobile operators had taken the hint quite well when they formed the region's biggest M2M alliance early this year. Eleven mobile operators under Bridge Alliance, including Globe Telecom, a Philippines-based telecommunications company, joined the said alliance to offer the Philippines and Asia Pacific a one-stop-shop for M2M development.
M2M technology is a means of connecting a communication device to a physical asset, which at this point in the development of the IoT, is responsible for creating the network of almost anything. M2M can connect relatively any hardware - vehicles, boats, manufacturing machines, ATMs and POS terminals, among many others. Companies can generate useful data from these machines, enabling them to operate faster, gather more accurate data and improve efficiency in terms of cost, manpower and time. M2M Technology was first introduced in the Philippines in August 2011 by Globe Telecoms under its Enterprise Business Group. However, due to issues such as cost and logistics, M2M has not been widely adopted in the country.
Locally, Globe currently offers M2M solutions in Fixed Asset Management, Fleet Management, Security and Surveillance. Globe Telecom has also recently announced partnership with Yamaha Motor Philippines for another M2M delivery under its Fleet Management flagship. Globe will provide the country's leading motorcycle manufacturer with delivery service solutions as well as other vehicles with GPS devices that will enable Yamaha Philippines to monitor information such as location, distance traveled, engine status, and speed of their motorcycle products. Globe's M2M communication solutions will also allow Yamaha to deploy incident alerts on their products, which will be very useful in case of an accident. Globe aims to make it big on the global market as well. With the recent alliance, Globe Telecom believes that it will be critical to the company's growth as it will give the company the advantage in the local market as well as globally.
The alliance aims to eliminate the complexities of dealing with multiple organizations by offering a smooth delivery of M2M services in the region, surmounting geographical restrictions and limitations. Overall, the alliance aims to improve customers' service experience with enhanced customer support, service level satisfaction and interoperability.
"M2M is an important pillar of growth for us. Being part of this initiative gives us a strategic advantage in our local market, and our customers can look forward to comprehensive regional geographical coverage and superior service." says Gil Genio, Globe Telecom Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Business and International Markets.
