M2M technology is the next big source of productivity and the global economy is ready for it. This is according to Globe Telecom's Head of IG, Reynaldo Lugtu, Jr, at the Asia M2M Business Platform Conference held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Globe Telecom was the only Philippine participant and Lugtu was the only panelist from the country to attend the said conference, which is considered as one of the region's leading conferences aimed at addressing issues in technology adoption.
Lugtu believed that despite numerous reports of a decrease in global productivity of M2M in recent years, connected devices are steadily transforming the face of the enterprise, and has introduced opportunities for new services.
"With huge improvements on M2M infrastructure, applications, devices, hardware and software vendors, prime movers of M2M are poised to greatly contribute to productivity gains by organizations and the global economy in general," the Globe Telecom Exec stressed. He further added that, "In the Philippines, Globe Telecom has been helping logistics and delivery firms improve their productivity and gain efficiencies by as much as 30 percent by employing M2M for tracking and monitoring delivery trucks."
He pointed out that machine-to-machine solutions will help automate many processes and this will result in significant cost savings, operational efficiency, gains as well as process and productivity improvement. This will also enable quick decision-making and more revenue streams for companies and organizations, not just in the country but across the region.
In Asia Pacific, M2M connections will reach about 116 million connections next year and is expected to grow at a whooping 2 billion connections worldwide in 2021. Providers and consumers across countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia have reported an enormous gain from banking, utilities, logistics and other enterprise clients. These are some of the industries that can truly gain and reap huge benefits and gains from M2M implementation. Trading can also gain from M2M with trip optimization, SLA improvement, improved security and theft protection, as well as pilferage with the use of fleet management applications. According to Lugtu, these industries can maximize their productivity through predictive maintenance, and increase efficiency gains by getting rid of costly in-site maintenance.
The Globe Telecom Exec agrees with the overall viewpoint of the conference that it is about time to have industry-defining platforms and readily-available infrastructure. The increase in awareness and knowledge of M2M in different industries and vertical markets will bring about an increase in the adoption of the technology as well. "That is why it is incumbent with Globe IG as a service provider to actively promote this among industry verticals and associations that will greatly benefit from it." He added.
Meantime, LeadingQuest and Parlacom Founder and CEO, Clovis Lacerda, agrees with Mr. Lugtu in the company's continued efforts to support M2M in Asia Pacific. "With more companies pushing and supporting the movement to have standardized platforms and good readily-available infrastructure that M2M solutions providers can put to good use, true international M2M connectivity with a single point of integration for multiple networks will be achieved."
Lacerda further emphasized that with with widespread, worldwide adoption of M2M technology, providers such as Parlacom, can offer more highly customizable, flexibly priced solutions to a wide range of customers.
